Fern Canyon Oasis
12/5/2020: This is a desert hike complete with cactus, no water, and a palm oasis on the Agua Caliente Indian Reservation. We especially enjoyed the small oasis (Fern Canyon Oasis) at about 1.75 miles in (hiking clockwise). Definitely worth the $9 entry fee ($7 for Seniors 62+). End your hike through a long, pleasant valley of palm trees with water trickling through it. Very beautiful, but many people hike only this last part by doing an out and back of about two miles (Palm Canyon Trail), so it might be busy.
Barrel Cactus
Marg's Notes: Chilly morning. Left ~9:00. To Agua Caliente. A great park on the Reservation of the Band of Cahuilla Indians. (I guess AKA Indian Canyons on the brochure) We did a 6+ mile loop that includes Fern Canyon: a beautiful oasis of palm trees. Lots of barrel cacti. A bit of a climb at TH beginning, but worth it for the views. At the end, about 1 mile out, was Palm Canyon. Again, a beautiful oasis. There were a lot of people there. We did the loop counter clockwise and were soon alone in the wilderness. We did see some mountain bikes Did not look like fun! A great hike. We drove to another part of the park, Andreas Canyon, for a picnic. Were going to do a 1 mile walk, but there were lots of people so came back to shower & have happy hour!
Lasagna for dinner.
Rod’s other note: I absolutely love Marg’s notes! She has been making little notes in our calendars for over 40 years of wedded bliss starting when we lived together in a bure (grass house) in Fiji when we were in the Peace Corps. I love going back and reading all here calendar entries.
